Yuzhny Port, Ukraine
UNCTAD Code: UAYUZ
Lat 46°36′N / lon 31°01′E
British Admiralty Chart: 2202
Admiralty Pilot No.24
Time zone: GMT/UTC +2
General Description
It has specialized terminals for coal, iron ore, grains, general cargo, containers and oil products. It consists of 2 basins, water depth varying between 5.7 and 18.5 meters. Dredging operations are under way and presently the port can accommodate ships with max draft 18.50 meters brackish water at berths 5 and 6 of Main Port. In 2015 will be completed the reconstruction of sea approaching canal and inland approaches to deep-water berths with bringing the depth to 21 m. This will allow loading at the berths of large vessels with deadweight up to 250.000 dwt.
Port complex comprises of
- Commercial District No.1: Located on the West shore of the Adjalyk Liman for transshipment of chemical cargoes
- Berths No 1 & 2: urea and urea ammonium nitrate solution. Berths No 3 & 4: Liquid chemicals. At berth No.3 loading of ammonia is performed and at berth No.4 loading of methanol and loading/discharging vegetable oil and palm oil
- Private grain terminal Borivage to the north- west No 34: for grains
- Private terminal TIS to the north, north-east for transshipment of bulk cargoes, loading/discharging vegetable oil and palm oil, general cargoes, containers and steel products. Berth No: 16 grains, Berth No: 17 fertilizers in bulk and grains, Berth No 18: Iron ore pellets, Berths No 19 & 20: iron ore concentrate and coal, Berth No: 21 containers, steel products and coal, Berth No 22: containers, steel products, coal, vegetable oil and palm oil.
- Commercial port District No.2: Located on the East of the Adjalyk Liman for transshipment of bulk cargoes and steel products. Berths No 5 & 6: Coal and Iron Ore. Berth No: 7 Iron Ore, HBI and Coal. Berths 8 & 9: Coal
- Sea Oil Terminal Pivdenny for Crude Oil and Transbunker Oil terminal for oil products and bunkers to the South-east.
Anchorage Areas
Anchorage No.356 for gas carrying vessels in depth of 14-21 m.
Anchorage No.357 in depth of 15-22 m and Anchorage No.358 in depth of 16-18 m for other vessels.
Restrictions
- Max draft 18,5 m brackish water.
- Max loa 287m.
- Density of sea water at Yuzhny bay is 1.007 -1.013 depending on direction of wind and current of water.
Ballast water requirements
The State Inspection for Protection of Black Sea (SIPBS), or “Ecologists” as they are commonly known, require that all ships exchange all ballast water taken in other regions with (deep sea) Black Sea water before calling at any Ukrainian port. The exchange must be recorded in ships’ official logs.
Prior to arrival, the Master has to declare to Agent quantity of ballast water that he intends to discharge in harbor for the cargo operation.
Upon berthing, the representative of SIPBS visits the vessel and takes random samples of water from the ballast tanks (3 bottles of 2 liters each), seal them with their stamp and take 2 for analysis, the remaining bottle staying on board.
These samples are examined in the laboratory of SIPBS (or approved laboratory) to check if they comply with the following standards:
Maximum permissible concentration of main pollutants in internal sea waters and territorial waters of Ukraine

Actually SIPBS checks, besides salinity (Black Sea is brackish water), only for presence of the following admixtures: oil products, metals, suspended solids.
If the contents of any of the above components exceed the allowed level, the ship is prohibited to discharge her ballast and needs to sail and exchange her ballast in open sea.
In case Master disobeys and discharges the “dirty” ballast water, then the Authorities will impose penalties according to the “dirtiness” of the water, taking into consideration the values found for iron, oil and suspended solids:
- -iron: US$ 54.00 / per 1 KG of pollutant substance
- -suspended solids: US$ 132.00 / per 1 KG of pollutant substance
- -oils and fats: US$ 329.00 / per 1 KG of pollutant substance
The Penalty will be imposed applying following formulae: Ballast water quantity in thousands cbm * actual content in mg/cbm * applicable fine in US$
Weather Restrictions
Yuzhny port is non-freezing port, but sometimes during winter it is not excluded that port harbor may be covered by broken ice, coming from nearby "Yuzhny bug" river due to NE-E wind.
During such period Harbour Master may announce ice campaign but usually this lasts only for few days.
